Posted by John Rogers | Aug 29, 2021

Disgraced found and former CEO of Theranos who is standing trial next week, is likely going to defend herself by claiming that she was the victim of a lengthy abusive relationship with her ex-boyfriend.

Elizabeth Holmes is expected to begin trial on Monday. Newly unsealed court documents reveal that she plans to have an expert testify about the psychological, emotional and sexual abuse she experienced from Ramesh Balwani, who served as the COO for Theranos. Balwani has been charged alongside Holmes.

The pair are accused of engaging in a multi-million dollar scheme to defraud investors from 2010 to 2015, and of defrauding physicians and patients who paid for the companies blood testing service. Holmes and Balwani are together charged with wire fraud and conspiracy.

Both have pleaded not guilty and face up to 20 years in federal prison if convicted. Holmes is scheduled to commence trial next week, whereas Balwani's trial is expected to start in 2022.
