FBI Launches “Virtual Asset Exploitation Unit” Consisting of Crypto Experts

Posted by John Rogers | Mar 07, 2022

The Federal Bureau of Investigation (“FBI”) launched a new unit to combat cryptocurrency exploitation. This unit will work alongside the National Cryptocurrency Enforcement Team of the Department of Justice to prosecute the misuse of cryptocurrency.

According to the DOJ,

“The FBI's new Virtual Asset Exploitation Unit is a specialized team of cryptocurrency experts dedicated to providing analysis, support, and training across the FBI, as well as innovating its cryptocurrency tools to stay ahead of future threats.”

Earlier this week, the Justice Department announced the new appointment of Eun Young Choi to serve as director of the National Cryptocurrency Enforcement Team.

The teams will focus its attention and resources on “virtual currency exchanges, mixing and tumbling services, infrastructure providers, and other entities that are enabling the misuse of cryptocurrency and related technologies to commit or facilitate criminal activity,” the Justice Department said.
